Magic the Gathering preview: Dark Ascension

After what has, in limited (sealed, drafts) especially, been a quite enjoyable last few months, it is now time for the second installment of the Innistrad set: Dark Ascension. With spoilers for all the cards available in some form or another online, it is time to get ready to play with these new toys.

The Gothic horror theme has continued with the addition of this new 158 card set (considerably less the then Innistrad's 264!).

Once again, players will be salivating at the astonishing power of some of the new cards with many strategies being formed. Indeed, counters for these new rules are also beginning to be anticipated and planned online. As always, players will greatly appreciate the new and differing powers, getting ready to adapt their carefully planned constructed decks to fit the new purpose.

Retained mechanics include the successful curse, flashback, morbid and (arguably) double faced cards. Adding new complexity to strategy will be the fateful hour (where cards gain enhanced abilities when you're looking at your most vulnerable (less then five life)), and perhaps the most anticipated ability in the last few years: undying (where creatures with the ability die, they return to the battlefield with +1/+1 counters on them). These cards will have incredible effects on games and some of the combinations imaginable are truly mouthwatering.

Indeed, to whet your appetite here are some of the new cards.

I truly look forward to playing Gruesome Discovery:

e.g with Geralf's Messenger

Further, the new forms of Sorin (to vampire decks)

Mikeus

and Diregraf Captain will add much to constructed decks.

Also, honourable mention must go to the Black Cat.

Thank you Wizards of the Coast.Thank you.

Dark Ascension is released on paper forms the coming weekend (Friday night Midnight release on the 27th moving it to the 28th January) and the Magic the Gathering Online (MTGO) on 20th February.

Happy playing everyone!
